Jacksonville lost a close game to the New England Patriots last year in a game that ended an unlikely playoff run just short of a Super Bowl berth.
When they avenged that loss and found themselves the only undefeated team in the AFC South, another playoff run seemed inevitable.
But victories have been scarce since then and now the Jaguars find themselves trying to avoid the division basement in a Week 10 matchup against the Colts.
The Jaguars’ Blake Bortles and Leonard Fournette practiced in full Monday, but the Colts’ Marlon Mack was with the trainers and wide receiver Ryan Grant was off the field.
Fournette’s return gives Jacksonvillearunning threat to take some heat off Bortles. Whether he can stay on the field and whether the Jaguars’ struggling quarterback responds as coaches hope will determine if Jacksonville returns to the playoff picture or not.
Indianapolis has no misperceptions about their playoff hopes. Rookie head coach Frank Reich is trying new schemes and putting things together to assure Andrew Luck gets a legitimate shot at a Super Bowl before he retires.
Injuries and notes
Fournette did not appear limited in his bid to return from hamstring issues. No one else is listed on the Jaguars’ injury report.
Marlon Mack picked up the Colts rushing attack and helped the Colts enter the bye with a 42-point outburst against the Raiders. Monday’s side work is probably part of a maintenance program aimed at keeping him on the field for the Colts.
Robert Turbin returned to practice this week off the injured reserve list and could be active this week as well.
Frank Reich put in plays and a system aimed at reducing the number of hits his star passer has traditionally taken. Andrew Luck finished the Oakland game without getting sacked for the first time in years. His completion percentage is high and the offense is buying into Reich’s system.
If the Colts invest in defense for 2019, this could be the beginning of a successful stint for the rookie coach.
Doug Marrone still believes in Blake Bortles despite some rough outings that have outsiders questioning the contract extension Jacksonville extended to him. With the full support of his boss, Tom Coughlin, and ownership, he is not worried about job security as he tries to get Jacksonville through a tough stretch.

Who will win the Colts-Jaguars game?
Indianapolis entered the bye with a feel-good game against an inferior opponent. Andrew Luck will keep the team in a lot of games by himself, which is how he’s felt at times this season.
Doug Marrone has to get his defense and offense to remember how to play winning football. That seems like an easier task when you have the talent Jacksonville has.
